University College of Engineering - Burla the oldest and premier Engineering College of Orissa, is a constituent College of Biju Patnaik University of Technology, Rourkela. It has already produced more than 10,000 graduate engineers and 2000 Postgraduates in different fields of Engineering and Technology. The college was founded on 12th August 1956 under Utkal University. In January 1967, the management of the college was taken up by Biju Patnaik University of Technology, Rourkela. The college is located at the foot of the world famous Hirakud Dam amidst beautiful surroundings of lakes and mountains. Burla is well connected to Bhubaneshwar and Kolkata with roads and railways. Sambalpur to Burla is 10 kms both by road and rail. Hirakud Railway station is only 2 km away from the college.
Since its inception, the college has made a significant progress. Initially, the college offered degree courses in Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering disciplines. In 1972, degree courses in Electronics and Tele-Communication Engineering was introduced. B.E. Courses in Information Technology was approved by AICTE and is being offered from the current academic session. Post-Graduate courses in various specializations started in Civil and Electrical Engineering in 1969. At present, the college offers P.G. Courses (both Regular and Part Time) in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics and Tele-Communication Engineering. Besides, the college also offers a 3-years Masters Degree course in Computer Application (MCA) since 1993. The syllabi have undergone regular changes to update and modernize the course content so as to maintain the level of technical education at par with other institutes of national repute. Facilities available for the enhancement of the standard of the technical education, sponsored research, consultancy programmes of industries and R&D sections of national organizations. Semester system is being followed for both Undergraduate and Post-graduate studies. Campus Interviews conducted by various recruiting agencies have created wide avenues of employment for graduate/postgraduate engineering students. A good number of students have been absorbed by various recruiting agencies through campus interviews. Further, students of this college have done extremely well in the GATE Exami

The college receives 5 years plan grants from UGC and project grants from AICTE, New Delhi, the Ministry of Human Resources Development an Department of Science and Technology of the Govt. of India. -
The college also receives grants-in aid from the Govt. of Orissa. -
Students are given admission through GATE score & interviews by the respective engineering departments. -
Admission of students to the 1st year B.Tech Programme, MCA programme & 3rd sem. B.Tech. (Lateral Entry of Diploma Holders) are made through the Joint Engineering Examination (JEE) for the state of Orissa conducted by BPUT in the various disciplines as approved by AICTE. Semester system is followed for both Undergraduate and Post-graduate studies.
